Architecture, Commercial, Gardens

The Park, a District Sports and Recreation Center in Kraków, is conceived as a large-scale public landscape — a contemporary gesture integrating water, sport, and open space into a coherent, multi-layered environment. Rather than a singular object, the project establishes a new spatial field that organizes movement, activity, and collective experience.

This Project
is Awarded

The client, the City of Kraków, aimed to create a new destination — a space combining recreation, sport, and public life, serving both local residents and users from across the region.

THE IDEA
THE IDEA

The project explores the relationship between openness and intensity. Architecture and landscape are treated as a continuous system, where natural elements and built structures coexist to create a layered spatial experience.

The project explores the relationship between openness and intensity. Architecture and landscape are treated as a continuous system, where natural elements and built structures coexist to create a layered spatial experience.

Water forms the primary organizing element of the project. Outdoor pools, a large retention pond with an island, and the nearby Rzewny stream create a continuous water landscape that structures the entire site and supports both recreation and environmental performance.

Design Principles

The park unfolds as a sequence of interconnected spaces — from open recreational areas and gardens to sports infrastructure and event zones. A multi-purpose arena introduces a metropolitan scale, enabling large gatherings while remaining integrated within the landscape.

Atmosphere

The heart of the park is the pond — the central element around which the entire life of the project unfolds. It defines the spatial structure, organizing relationships between functions and movement. Around it, zones of recreation, sport, and social interaction develop, forming a cohesive landscape of activity and rest.

The hall is designed as a flexible and open space, enabling a wide range of functions — from sports to cultural events. Its monumental, almost Roman form acts as a grandstand, from which the park becomes a stage — a space of everyday life and shared experience.

The recreational zone is designed as an open and accessible space organized around a system of pools. The Olympic pool forms its central element, complemented by leisure areas, sunbathing zones, and smaller pools of varying depth. The layout encourages fluid movement between functions, while integrated gastronomic facilities create a vibrant and active social environment.

The phased development strategy enables gradual implementation, beginning with the water-based recreational core and expanding toward the full program of sports and public infrastructure.
